The human podocyte cell line (CIHP-1) is a primary cell line isolated from human kidney. Podocytes are highly complex terminally differentiated cells with complex cell structures. They are a key component of glomerular filtration. Cell cycle control, growth arrest and differentiation are the keys to the biology of podocytes in vivo. Conditionally immortal podocyte cell lines allow an in vitro maturation process, similar to the development and maturation of podocytes in vivo. The result is a uniform and stable cell source, showing the expression of key antigen markers for differentiated in vivo podocytes, including the novel podocyte proteins nephrin, podocin, CD2AP and synaptopod protein.
