Schneider Electric and Boston University joint-study reveals a significant job surge during the transition to net-zero buildings

October 16 15:46 2023

Schneider Electric and Boston University have jointly released a ground-breaking study, “Building a Green Future: Examining the Job Creation Potential of Electricity, Heating, and Storage in Low-Carbon Buildings,” revealing the potential for over 2 million new jobs and up to 141 million additional job years in Europe and the United States through the adoption of clean energy technologies in new and retrofitted buildings. Conducted by the Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS) and the Schneider ElectricTM Sustainability Research Institute (SRI), the study presents the first granular estimate of job creation in low-carbon buildings, emphasising the importance of electrification and digitalization for global emission reduction.

According to Vincent Petit, Senior Vice President of Climate and Energy Transition Research at Schneider Electric and Head of the SRI, the research highlights the significant socioeconomic benefits accompanying the rapid transition to net-zero buildings.

Key findings include region-specific job creation potential, such as France with 295,000 potential jobs, Germany with 257,000, and the United States’ Northeast region with an anticipated 123,000 jobs. Benjamin Sovacool, Director of Boston University’s Institute for Global Sustainability, emphasises the study’s role in shaping climate policy and addressing concerns about the employment impact of decarbonization. The findings are expected to guide companies, communities, and governments towards informed decision-making in building projects and policies.
